Even if it is raining, take an umbrella and go to this location! Heck, even if it isn't raining, take an umbrella (because it will be raining real soon) and go to this location. This is one of my most favorite gardens in terms of the variety of flora and fauna, as well as the crashing waves. Some of the best pictures we have ever taken in Hawaii were actually taken here.
Located in the 4-Mile Scenic Route in the Hilo District, off Hwy 11 lies Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Garden
A veritable smorgasbord of flowers, plants & trees from all around the world. I think I remember the Guide telling us that 80% of their plants were not native to HI but have thrived in their inviting climate
All I do know, is it was purrrrrty
Orchids, orchids, orchids; too many flowering plants to even begin to name; a Lilly Pond complete w/ water lilies & Koi fishies; several beautimus Ocean overlooks; The Macaw Aviary; and wild Mongooses running about - we saw a mama & her baby....CUTE
And the highlight of the whole garden was the Black Bat Orchid - this black flower (yes a black flower) with these huge upper petals that spread out like wings w/ this little round middle for its nose & stringy things hanging down for its whiskers - it was adorable!
Remember your bug spray.....it's humid & there are critters - or if not, they sell it at the Visitor Center & can set you up right
$15 entrance fee & a nice walking path to guide you on this lovely journey - takes about 1-2 hrs depending on how long you dawdle.
The orchid collection, the bromeliad collection, the tiny waterfall, and above all the magnificent steeply-sloping setting with crashing waves and deep blue water and are all what make this a fabulous destination.
You really don’t want to miss out on this attraction. Make sure you have extra batteries for the camera and don’t be afraid to ask someone to take a masterpiece picture of your family or group. You won’t be able to explain the beauty as well as you can show it to your friends and family back home.
A wonderful way to experience Hilo!
